The AE backbone makes a huge difference in rough water, keeping the boat rigid lengthwise. I strongly recommend it for flat water paddling.
Be careful though, because the backbone prevents the bottom of the boat from having as much give if it scrapes the bottom, and therefore it is more easily punctured. I only use the backbone on flat water, when there is no risk of scraping the bottom. I wouldn't use it in shallow water.

Bought my first convertible with back bone on recommendations off the web, didn't know any better. I picked up a used convertible as my second boat as my family was growing but no back bone. I now have two convertibles and two back bones, its a must. The boat will fold in half without it if your caring it on land and tracks much better on water with it it. If your paddling for more than a 15 min tour its a must.
